Bruce Latimer

In our 13th year we are very proud to have Bruce Latimer as our ‘Featured Artist’. Bruce Latimer is a resident of Balmain and was born in Sydney. He gained his Diploma in Fine Arts in painting from the National Art School in 1973, then his Diploma of Education in Art the following year. Since then he has lectured in painting and printing at the Sydney College of the Arts and the National Art School amongst other institutions.
Bruce's work is represented in collections throughout Australia and overseas and includes the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Galleries of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland and the National Art Gallery of New Zealand. Bruce's etchings involve the juxtaposing of images in order to explore our place in the environment.
As he explains, “As wonderful as it is, I am not content to simply observe the natural world, rather I am compelled to examine our varied interactions with it. What usually captures my attention are the results of our intrusions and what I celebrate is the beauty of the world despite these intrusions”. Latimer references the classical landscapes of earlier masters such as John Glover, but adds items of urban detritus as stark, abject reminders of the destructive path we have carved through that same landscape.
