Ian Grant is a very well-known and highly respected Sydney artist. His work envelops the viewer in a soothing atmospheric calm and has the most wonderful lyrical and reflective qualities and a great sense of mood.
There’s also an influence of some Aboriginal painting in its capacity to poetically evoke without illustrating a particular site in a Western sense. Ian has been exhibiting in solo exhibitions and group shows since 1972.
"I'm interested in using visual structure and pattern to make everyday experiences memorable and evoke a meditative or deep emotional experience."
Ian has held academic positions from 1976 - 2006, including head of painting in the School of Art UNSW. Ian has been a finalist in the Wynne prize four times, most recently in 2007. In 1987 he won the Blake prize. In 2004 he won the Fleurieu Peninsula Art prize, the richest Australian landscape painting award ($50 000) and one of the largest in the world.
