Anita West’s work is a dichotomy of fragmented images drawn from her experiences of the beach and the bush. She grew up in Townsville where she completed a Diploma in Fine Art in the mid 1980s. A career in teaching art at high schools followed in Australia and the USA from 1986 to 1995.
The urge to create her own art was a constant preoccupation and led Anita to give up the security of teaching to pursue her passion as a self-employed, full-time artist. She has participated in 13 solo exhibitions since 1988 and numerous group shows.
She shows large scale painting on canvas in her exhibitions and among her recent awards, Anita was a finalist in the Churchie Emerging Art Exhibition in Brisbane in 2007 and she won first prize in the Gloria Beletz Drawing Prize in Brisbane in 2006.
